Comparing personal training options: one on one, small group and online
Short answer
One on one training gives the most attention, small group training spreads the cost, and online coaching offers flexibility if you can train on your own. Whichever you choose, ask which certification the trainer holds and read the package terms before paying.
One on one sessions
Best if you're new to training, returning after a long break, or want close attention to form. The trainer plans each session around you and adjusts in real time. It's also the most expensive format per hour.
Small group and partner training
Two to six people share a trainer and the cost. You still get coaching, but less individual adjustment. It works well if you like the social side and already know the basics.
Online coaching
A trainer writes your program and checks in through an app, video or messages. It suits people who are comfortable training alone and want structure. Make sure you know how often you'll hear from the coach and whether form reviews are included.
Checking credentials
Personal training isn't a regulated profession in Canada, so anyone can use the title. Ask which organization issued the trainer's certification, whether it's current, and whether they carry liability insurance. If you have a health condition, talk to your doctor or a regulated professional first.
Reading package terms
- Do sessions expire if unused?
- Can you pause for travel or illness?
- Is gym access included, or extra?
- What is the cancellation window for a session?
