Questions to ask before your first spa visit

Short answer

Before a first spa visit, ask what your booking includes, how early to arrive, what to bring or wear, how gratuity works, and the cancellation policy. Mention anything the therapist should know, such as pregnancy or allergies, when you book.

What does the booking actually include?

Spa packages often have appealing names that don't say much. Ask how long the hands on treatment lasts, whether that includes changing time, and whether you can use pools, saunas or lounges before or after.

How early should I arrive?

Many spas ask for 15 to 30 minutes so you can check in, change and fill out a short form. Arriving late usually shortens your treatment rather than moving it.

What should I bring or wear?

  • Swimwear, if there are pools or co-ed thermal areas
  • Sandals, unless they're provided
  • A hair tie and minimal jewellery
  • Any accessibility needs you'd like the spa to prepare for

How do gratuity and cancellations work?

Some spas add a service charge automatically and others leave tipping to you. Ask, so you aren't surprised at checkout. Cancellation windows at spas are often longer than at salons, sometimes 24 to 48 hours, and gift card bookings may have their own rules.

What should I tell my therapist?

Mention pregnancy, allergies to oils or fragrance, and areas you'd prefer not to have worked on. You can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any point, or stop the treatment. A good therapist will check in with you.
